Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The BJP has expressed support for the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill, 2024, introduced by the West Bengal government, but emphasized that the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) already contains stringent provisions to combat crimes against women and children. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari moved a motion in the state assembly seeking seven amendments to the bill.
"We will wait for this bill to change into rules and get implemented. You have hurriedly introduced this bill and could have questioned if this had gone to the law committee. We want the execution of this bill immediately. We want results. We give full support," Adhikari stated.
He also pointed out, "The onus of the implementation of the bill and its conversion into rules lies on the government. We do not want votes. We will listen to the Chief Minister’s address but want an assurance of the bill’s implementation. This bill has nothing new; the government's motive is to divert the masses' attention."
The bill has been introduced by the Trinamool government in the wake of the gruesome rape and murder case of a 31-year-old junior doctor of RG Kar Hospital. Her body was found in the seminar hall of the hospital. One Civic Volunteer, Sanjay Roy, has been arrested in the case which is now being probed by the CBI.
